Phase 5 - Powering Up

Implementation Scenario

Depending on student abilities, teaching strategies, and curriculum emphasis, the suggested times may need adjustment. The recommended time for this phase is 2-3 hours.

  1. Begin the phase with a discussion of the solar panels on the ISS. Include visuals of the solar panels as a value-added component of the discussion. Incorporating the definition of geometry, discuss how geometry is applied to the structure of the solar panels.

  2. It is recommended that the Math Mentor tutorials (Perimeter, Introduction to Area, and Area of Rectangles) be used as an instructional base. These tutorials can be facilitated through a class discussion for students that have a limited prior knowledge of the concepts of area and perimeter. Otherwise these can be integrated into the teacher-led sequence of Phase 5.

  3. The teacher leads the students through Phase 5 through a class discussion and presentation. The teacher's role is to confirm understanding through questioning.

  4. Pause the class presentation sequence and have students individually, or in pairs, complete the lessons in Math Mentor, if the tutorials have not been presented in step #2. The tutorial, Area of Triangles, could be used after screen 4 or 5 depending on student needs.

  5. Direct students to complete the teacher-designated Exploration activities. The teacher acts as a coach to clarify understanding and as an assessor of student achievement to plan further learning.

  6. Students are then instructed to complete the Math Challenge individually. The information provided may result in additional classroom instruction and practice apart from the resource.

  7. Conclude the Phase by having students complete the Space Navigation Log.

  8. Evaluate student achievement using the assessment rubric provided.
