Teacher Notes
This performance task allows students to use the concepts and skills of Geometry of Space Navigation to design and create their own flag.
Although a project outline and scoring rubric are provided, the teacher may wish to add criteria that are relevant to the current unit of study or particular grade level. For instance, specifics about the use of colour or design elements, drawing from the Visual Arts curriculum complement the mathematics and science content of this task.
Timelines for this task are flexible.
Materials given are only suggestions. Students may choose to work in other media; fabric is one such option, depending on availability of materials.
It is suggested that this task be completed in pairs or small groups.
Performance Task #2
Show Your True Colours: Create a Junior Space Explorer Flag!
You have been commissioned to design a flag for the Junior Space Explorer program. In keeping with theme of Geometry in Space, your flag must contain evidence of angles, triangles, and quadrilaterals. The outside shape or perimeter of your flag must also reflect your understanding of symmetry. Look at a few sample flags below to get some ideas, then design and construct your own Junior Space Explorer flag.
Materials:

Procedure:
On grid paper, design at least 3 different flags, making sure to include angles, triangles, quadrilaterals and symmetry in your designs. You may choose to design them full-size or choose a scale (e.g. 1 cm = 5 cm). If you choose a scale, please include an explanation of it on the flag design page.
Select one of your designs to use as your final flag. On the back of your grid paper design page explain why you chose that particular design. Your explanation should show an understanding of symmetry, angles, triangles and quadrilaterals (e.g. I chose Design A because it has 4 lines of symmetry, the most of all my designs. It also contains 2 equilateral triangles whose 3 angles of 90° each add up to 180°. )
Using the materials provided, draw, cut out and put together the components of your flag, making sure it matches your original design. If you decide to alter your design, explain, in writing, why you did so.
